A sovereign island nation located off the southeast coast of the African continent, specifically east of Madagascar. It forms part of the Mascarene Islands.
Geography and Climate
The nation comprises the main island and several outlying islands. The climate is tropical, modified by southeast trade winds. There is a warm, dry season from May to October and a warm, humid, and wet season from November to April. Cyclones are possible between November and April.
History
Uninhabited before the arrival of the Dutch in 1598, the islands were subsequently governed by the French and then the British, gaining independence in 1968. The nation is a parliamentary republic within the Commonwealth.
Demographics
The population is diverse, with significant communities of Indo-Mauritians, Creoles, Sino-Mauritians, and Franco-Mauritians. English is the official language, though Creole and French are widely spoken.
Economy
The economy is diversified and based on tourism, textiles, sugar, and financial services. It is considered a high-income economy.
