Process Overview
The process involves several key steps: preparation of the substrate, application of a base coat, activation of the film, immersion of the substrate, and final sealing and finishing.
Substrate Preparation
The substrate must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared to ensure optimal adhesion. This often includes degreasing, sanding, and priming, depending on the material and desired finish.
Base Coat Application
A base coat, typically a primer or undercoat, is applied to provide a uniform surface and enhance adhesion of the patterned film. The choice of base coat depends on the substrate material and desired final color.
Film Activation
The patterned film, usually printed on a water-soluble backing, is carefully floated onto the surface of a water bath. A specialized activator solution is added to the water to facilitate the release of the film from its backing.
Immersion and Pattern Transfer
The prepared substrate is carefully lowered into the water bath, ensuring complete contact with the floating film. The film then adheres to the substrate, transferring the pattern. The substrate is then removed from the water bath.
Post-Immersion Steps
The substrate is allowed to dry completely. A clear coat sealant is often applied to protect the transferred pattern and provide a durable, finished surface. Additional steps may involve sanding, polishing, or other finishing techniques depending on the desired outcome.
